Questions and Answers

Why should I use the Kendall™ hydrogel breast feeding pads?

The Kendall™ hydrogel breast feeding pad is an absorbent, transparent hydrogel pad that provides cool, soothing relief to the individual who uses it. For nipple care, the Kendall™ hydrogel breast feeding pad is highly effective due to its unique formulation, which allows the pad to absorb and manage leakage through evaporation. This reduces the chance of maceration being caused through excess fluid upon healthy breast tissue. (Maceration is simply a breakdown of healthy tissue - when the skin looks white and wrinkled, similar to the appearance of skin after a long bath or a swim in the pool.) the Kendall™ hydrogel breast feeding pad will help provide extra cushioning and protection from clothing, which can cause friction and most importantly, its unique disc shape allows the pad to fit comfortably and securely inside a nursing bra.

What is the Kendall™ hydrogel breast feeding pad made of?

The Kendall™ hydrogel breast feeding pad is made up of three primary components: water, moisturizer, and polyurethane. The water helps provide a cool, soothing sensation when first applied. The moisturizer helps to keep your skin soft and smooth and also helps prevent the pad from drying out. The polyurethane binds the pad together, giving it strength and integrity even after absorption.

Since the Kendall™ hydrogel breast feeding pad is so absorptive, should I still use a nursing pad?

Certainly. When you have leakage, it usually comes out very quickly rather than slowly. Even though the Kendall™ hydrogel breast feeding pad is highly absorptive, it is designed to absorb slowly. The pad will aid in absorbing the leakage, however, the majority of fluid will be handled by the nursing pad.

How long should I use each Kendall™ hydrogel breast feeding pad?

Each Kendall™ hydrogel breast feeding pad can be used for several days. However, due to residual leakage, it may need to be changed more often. We recommend that you rinse (not soak) the pad with cool to warm water after each use to help get rid of any residual milk left behind. If, after a couple of days, the pad becomes milky or cloudy, it is advised that they are changed for a new pair.

Can I use soap to clean the pad?

No. Soaps or detergents should NOT be used since they may compromise the integrity of the pad. Warm water should be used instead.

Should I express milk (massage milk on nipple area) before using the Kendall™ hydrogel breast feeding pad s?

No. There is no need to apply milk or anything else to your nipples when using the Kendall™ hydrogel breast feeding pads. You can however, cleanse the nipple area with warm water prior to pad use.

Will the Kendall™ hydrogel breast feeding pad s promote yeast infections?

No. A clinical study was performed on 106 lactating mothers. No infections were reported while using the Kendall™ hydrogel breast feeding pads as compared to the control group that reported 8 breast infections. (p=<0.0025).

If I develop a yeast infection prior to the use of the Kendall™ hydrogel breast feeding pads can I still use the pad?

Yes. When a new mother contracts a yeast infection, they are typically given either topical or oral antifungals to help fight the infection. In addition, they are instructed to continue breast feeding. We do recommend that you thoroughly rinse the pad with warm water after each use to remove residual milk and/or excess medication from the pad surface. If the pad happens to become cloudy or milky in appearance, the pad should be discarded and replaced with a new one.
