Medela - Swing™ - Electric BreastPump with Calma Solitaire
comfortable. silent. efficient.
Express milk quietly and discreetly - The Swing electric Breastpump combines a multi-award-winning design with the latest technology. The electric breastpump is very quiet and therefore represents the ideal solution for regular and discreet breast pumping.
Design and nature perfectly combined
Swing is the multi-award-winning electric breastpump for mothers who need a breastpump for everyday use. Whether you work part time, want to have an evening out, play sports or just want to go shopping, the Swing electric breastpump is the ideal solution for active mothers who don't want to spend too much time for pumping.
Swing: the most popular single electric breastpump in the world
Swing is a very quiet electric breastpump. It can be used easily and completely effortlessly. The pump switches automatically from stimulation to expression phase.
Mother – friendly operation
It is really easy for you to switch between phases yourself or set the most comfortable vacuum level. The electric breastpump can be used with a mains adapter. The option of battery operation combined with the beltclip guarantees you maximum mobility.
Swing is easy to use: mothers can easily transport the electric breastpump if they want to express milk on the go. You can assemble the electric breastpump more easily, meaning it is readily available for you to use.
Also suitable for health problems
There are various issues which can make breastfeeding directly on the breast difficult, such as latch-on problems, breast infections or sore nipples. The electric breastpump Swing helps you to get around these problems, whilst still providing your baby with breastmilk at this difficult time. You have time to heal and enjoy the benefits of a short break from breastfeeding.
Medela has been the first company worldwide to deeply research babies and their feeding behaviour
The 2-Phase Expression Technology is based on the natural sucking rhythm of the baby: Short, stimulating movements are followed by longer, more intensive ones, ensuring an optimal milkflow. It's faster let-down and maximum milkflow significantly reduces pumping time. So you can express more milk in less time - and more comfortable.
2-Phase Expression
Breastfeeding is one of the most beautiful and natural experiences a mother can share with her baby. It is a unique time when mother and baby feel intensely close and intimate. Breastfeeding is also practical since the milk is always available at the right temperature, whenever the baby gets hungry. Moreover, breastfeeding benefits the health of both mother and baby in many different ways.
Nature made babies very efficient. They instinctively know how to get their mother's milk by changing the way they suckle at the breast during breastfeeding.
Knowing that current breastpumps are based on a study by Einar Egnell dating back to the 1950s, Medela's goal was to provide new scientific evidence for modern breastpump design. In the late 1990s, Medela's vision was to produce the most comfortable and efficient breastpump ever, imitating the baby's natural nursing rhythm. For this reason, Medela initiated a study into the physiology of a baby's natural sucking behaviour and also began to evaluate current electric breastpump function.
With Professor Peter Hartmann and his team, an ideal partnership was formed to conduct this research project at the Biochemistry Department of the University of Western Australia in Perth, Australia. Peter Hartmann is an internationally renowned specialist for his studies in the fields of breastfeeding and milk synthesis. In the course of 2002, Professor Hartmann's breakthrough research findings resulted in the development of an exclusive pumping pattern called 2-Phase Expression which closely mimics a baby's natural nursing rhythm.
The revolutionary 2-Phase Expression technology consists of:
First, a fast pumping rhythm to stimulate the milk ejection reflex and to start the milk flowing. This phase is named stimulation. Then, a slower pumping rhythm to express milk gently and efficiently. This phase is named expression.
Through intensive and pioneering work, Medela has converted the baby's intuitive knowledge into technological know-how. The result is 2-Phase Expression - the new standard for unsurpassed naturalness, comfort and efficiency in breastpumps.
Proven to feel most like a baby
High frequency patterns have been rated by mothers as feeling most like a baby (minimum 100 cycles per minute/similar to a baby's non-nutritive sucking of about 2 sucks per second) 2, 4
Proven to get more milk in less time (when pumping at Maximum Comfort Vacuum in the Expression Phase (please see page Good to know / Correct pumping))
Proven to achieve faster milk ejection and faster milk flow
Time to reach milk ejection:
With the introduction of 2-Phase Expression, Medela took a bold step towards modern breastpump technology and introduced the hospitalgrade Symphony breastpump in 2002. 2-Phase Expression is now available in four personal use breastpumps.
To complete the circle and assist in feeding the expressed milk to the baby, Medela has further developed the research and designed Calma. A unique feeding solution which encourages the baby to pause and breathe regularly, Thereby maintaining their naturally learned feeding behaviour. Pioneered to benefit the mother and baby’s unique breastfeeding bond.
Choose the right breastshield for you
Every mother needs her individual breastshield size. This is important to have an efficient pumping session without pain and to empty completely the breast in a shorter period of time. There for Medela offers 5 different sizes of its PersonalFit breastshields.
BPA-free parts and thorough cleaning - for the good of your baby
All products that come in contact with breastmilk are BPA-free and easy to clean, no matter whether you boil, disinfect or clean them using our microwave bags.
Important
Medela pumps are designed as a pumping system. Please use Medela original accessories only.
Swing is a single electric breastpump and intended to be used for expressing Breastmilk from one breast at a time. Swing is not designed for effective double pumping as it will provide not sufficient vacuum.
For simultaneous pumping Medela recommends double electric pumps such as the Swing Maxi or Freestyle.

Breastfeeding Benefits
Breastfeeding is one of the most natural and beneficial activities for mother and baby. There is no other single action by which a mother can so dramatically impact the present and future health of her baby.
No formula can duplicate the unique properties of breastmilk, no matter how many vitamins, minerals and supplements are added to what is basically a chemical formulation.
Breastmilk is the one and only natural, complete and complex nutrition for human infants. Just as importantly, breastfeeding promotes an exceptional bond between mother and baby that only a mother can provide.
Advantages for the mother
Storing and thawing of Breastmilk
Breastmilk is very precious
You should store and thaw your breastmilk correctly. This is the only way you can be sure that all the important nutrients are preserved and bacterial contamination is minimised.
Guidelines for storing/thawing breastmilk
Medela recommends using the following guidelines for storing and thawing breastmilk. For healthy term babies.
Room temperature |
Refrigerator |
Freezer |
Thawed breastmilk |
---|---|---|---|
4-6 hours at 19 to 26°C |
3-8 days at 4°C (39°F) |
6-12 months -18 to |
In refrigerator for 10 hours |
Tips for freezing/thawing breastmilk:
Do not store breastmilk in the door of the refrigerator. Instead choose the coldest part of the refrigerator (this is at the back of the glass shelf above the vegetable compartment).
You can freeze expressed breastmilk in milk bottles or "Pump & Save"* bags. Do not fill the bottles or bags more than 3/4 full to allow space for possible expansion.
Label the bottles or "Pump & Save" bags with the date of expression.
Do not thaw frozen breastmilk or do not warm breastmilk in a microwave or a pan of boiling water to avoid loss of vitamins, minerals and other important components and to prevent burns.
ln order to preserve the components of the breastmilk, thaw the milk in the refrigerator overnight. Alternatively, you can hold the bottle or "Pump & Save" bag under warm water (max. 37 ° C).
Gently swirl the bottle or "Pump & Save" bag to mix any fat that has separated. Avoid shaking or stirring the milk.
With the B-Well bottle warmer, it is possible to warm breastmilk in a gentle way.
