Learn all about opposites with the master of extremes, Dr. Seuss!
Dr. Seuss beginner opposite cards teach the youngest children how to play with words -- just like Dr. Seuss! 12 oversized flash cards are double-sided with Seuss excerpts, games, activities, and illustrations. With foil and glitter galore, this interactive format will prompt even the most reluctant readers to PLAY!
Children's Literature
The twelve large cards in the deck are designed to teach opposites. The pairs include some of the more obvious ones: up/down, off/on and in/out. Others may be a little more difficult, such as happy/sad, new/old and near/far. The learning goals are stated, and the process is described in the enclosed guide. The first step is to go through the cards and make sure that your child understand the concepts and repeats the words. After you are comfortable that the concept is understood, turn the card over and show the opposite. You can test the learning and retention by placing the cards on a flat surface and asking your child to provide the opposite of what is depicted. (It doesn't matter which side is used.) The more abstract concepts involve learning prepositions which describe where things are in relation to other things. Other cards address how things are (e.g., empty, full), and these words are adjectives. Once the information on the cards has been mastered, there are a couple of games that can be played. The "Simon Says Opposites" is pretty complex. Many of the pictures on the cards will remind kids of their favorite Dr. Seuss story. The cards are plastic-coated and sturdy so they should stand up to plenty of use and abuse. They fit in a box that appears to have a magnetic clasp. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
