Edward Built a Rocket Ship by Michael Rack was a bargain book store purchase. The RRP is £5.99 but I think we paid around £1.50 for our copy. Amazon have it presently available for only £2.09, which I think is a perfectly reasonable price for a nice children's book like this is.
Edward Built a Rocket Ship is a story about a little boy called Edward who wants to jet off into space. He decides that he needs to set about building his own rocket ship to achieve this, and is soon jetting off up into the stars (in his dreams!). He takes a tour all around the universe, and gets to see all kinds of stars and planets, meteor showers and aliens. There's something new on every page.
This story flows beautifully, and is written in rhyme throughout. The grandson absolutely adores stories which are written in rhyme anyway, so it was no surprise that he thoroughly enjoyed this book right from the very first time he heard it. It doesn't just flow constantly with clever rhymes, it also includes smatterings of onomatopoeia like 'ka boom' which are written in large, winding print across the illustrations to add effect.
The illustrations are a little crude in places, but they're bright and colourful and the grandson certainly seems to be drawn to them. I think this is a fun bedtime story book that will appeal to slightly older youngsters of about 4 - 8yrs, and especially boys. It's clever, snappy and flowing. It evens sneaks in a little educational lesson about the solar system while it's at it.
