A hungry caterpillar eats his way through a varied and very large quantity of food until, full at last, he forms a cocoon around himself and goes to sleep.

One of the best-selling children's books of all time, The Very Hungry Caterpillar has been delighting young readers for over thirty years. This classic book will continue to introduce new generations of children to the magical world of Eric Carle.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is takes the reader through the life cycle of a caterpillar. The book starts with a tiny egg on a leaf. Then a caterpillar is born and he is very hungry. He eats everything he can find: fruit, sweets and meat. Then he gets sick and becomes a big, fat caterpillar. He then builds himself a cocoon and then becomes a beautiful butterfly.

This story is a classic. I love how it encompasses many different teaching points: the life cycle of a butterfly and counting. Eric Carle makes the life cycle so simplistic that it's very easy for children to understand. When he talks about what the caterpillar ate he makes it an opportunity to work with numbers. On the page where he eats the fruit, Carle made the five pages different lengths so you can see one of each fruit, then when you flip each page you see the number of that fruit he ate. I think this is great for children to practice counting. The teacher can have them help her count the number of each as they are reading. On the pages where the caterpillar is eating, each fruit has a hole through it, showing that the caterpillar had eaten through it. I love the visualization of this. The way Carle illustrated the caterpillar, makes him appear very friendly and colorful. In his illustrations he puts faces on the sun and the moon. A lot of the backgrounds are white which put more of a focus on the caterpillar and what is happening.
