Snuza Hero - Mobile Baby Movement Monitor

Cordless baby monitor with unique vibration feature to reassert movement

Snuza Hero is portable and easy-to-use movement monitor which clips onto baby's diaper to ensure that normal movement is maintained. Hero detects even the slightest abdominal movement and will alert you if your baby's movements are very weak or fall to less than 8 movements per minute. If no abdominal movement is detected at all for a period of 15 seconds, Hero will vibrate gently. Often this vibration is enough to rouse the baby, and Hero will revert to monitoring mode. After three vibration/rouse incidents, the Rouse Warning will alert you to the fact that your baby's abdominal movements have stopped for 15 seconds on three occasions. If no further movement is detected for another 5 seconds, an alarm will sound to alert you. The Snuza Hero will pick up external movement it is therefore not suitable for co-sleeping babies or bedsharing. We advise that the Snuza Hero should not be used when the baby is in motion like in a car seat or a stroller.

Guidelines for use

  • Hero's sensor tip must always be in contact with the baby in the tummy area.
  • If this contact is lost, Hero will sound an alarm.
  • To prevent unnecessary false alarms caused by Hero not touching the baby, please:-
    • Use the correct size diaper. Diapers that are too big loosen around the waistband, causing Hero to lose contact.
    • Fold the waistband or top edge of the diaper over to create a double-fold, giving Hero a firm grip on the diaper.
    • Adjust the adhesive tapes so that there is a snug fit around the tummy.
    • Make sure that Hero is firmly and fully clipped onto the folded waistband.
    • Make sure that the sensor is in direct contact with the baby.
    • Press the ON switch.
  • Please note:- Snuza Movement Monitors detect the slightest movement, including movement from external sources such as when travelling in a vehicle, pushing a pram, etc. Hero should only be relied upon when there is NO external movement present, ie when the vehicle, pram, carrycot, etc is stationery.

Users' tips

  • If you have problems with it coming loose once baby becomes mobile, I suggest a snug fitting Carter's onesie and pants set. It keeps it in place when baby becomes mobile!
  • Another option is to use a safety pin - insert it through the material and through the back of the clip - the clip is designed in such a way that this is possible. It won't come off until you remove the safety pin. Obviously this is only recommended before the diaper goes on so that there's no risk of hurting baby.

Clothing

  • Hero can also be clipped onto the waistband of elasticated pants, as long as the sensor maintains contact with the baby in the tummy area.
  • There may also be a thin layer of clothing (eg a vest) between the Sensor and the skin, but ensure that the sensor maintains contact.
  • The monitor can also be used if baby is dressed in light clothing (for example, a Babygro) over the nappy or pants to which the Hero is attached.
  • Too much clothing may attenuate or muffle the alarm. Make sure the alarm can be heard if baby is covered in clothing and/or blankets.

If you follow these guidelines properly, you can be sure that baby's every movement is being monitored

Replacing the Battery

The batteries used in Snuza Movement Monitors are user-replaceable. The life of the replaceable battery depends entirely on usage. Battery life will vary significantly depending on the average daily duration of use and/or alarm duration and/or number of alarms. Turning on and off unnecessarily shortens the battery life. If the number of alarms is high, check diaper fitment.

If the Battery Indicator Light shows that the battery is depleted or nearing depletion (flashing orange or red), do not use the monitor before replacing the battery. Use only Snuza CR14250 3.0v batteries in the monitor if the label does not say SE. If the label says SE only use CR2 batteries. (see Contact Us for details of your national distributor).

  • Remove the Battery Cover on the underside of the unit.
  • Remove the depleted battery.
  • Insert the new battery, ensuring that the polarity is correct.
  • Replace the Battery Cover and ensure that it is correctly closed.
  • Test the unit by switching on and ensuring that the Battery Indicator Light flashes green.
  • If the unit starts emitting a beep after the battery has been replaced, simply press the ON/OFF and MODE/OFF buttons simultaneously to turn it off.

**Please note that the product guarantee does not apply to the battery.

Disposal

The battery must be disposed of in accordance with your country's laws governing the disposal and recycling of batteries.

FAQ

1. How does Hero differ from the Snuza Go!?

Hero has an additional vibration feature which causes the unit to vibrate gently after 15 seconds where no abdominal movement has been detected. This often serves to reassert the baby's movement, but if no further movement is detected, Hero emits an alarm. Snuza Go! will go directly to alarm mode after 15 seconds of no movement.

2. How is Hero different from an 'under the mattress' monitor?
Although 'under the mattress' monitors also monitor movement in a similar manner to Snuza Hero, these monitors are generally not mobile. Hero can be left attached to the baby for constant monitoring or kept in the carrying case, attached and activated whenever required, no matter where the baby is.

3. I use an under-mattress monitor which keeps false alarming. How do I know Hero won't do the same?
Snuza Hero monitors the tummy area which is where most of the movement occurs, so it's much better at picking up these movements than under-mattress monitors. This means that false alarms are drastically reduced. In addition, with under-mattress monitors, if the baby moves off the sensor pad during the night, it will false alarm. This won't happen with Hero since it is attached to the diaper.

4. What exactly is the vibration on the Hero model for?
This is a proactive stimulator which attempts to rouse your baby after 15 seconds of no movement. Very often, if a baby is still for this long, a little tactile stimulation gets the movement going again. And of course, if it fails to rouse the baby, the alarm will sound after a total of 20 seconds of no movement.

5. Is Hero a medical device?
No, strictly speaking by definition of MDD 93/42/EEC and 2007/47/EEC, Hero is not a medical device. It falls into a similar class of device as exercise heart-rate monitors (the kind that has a strap around your chest and transmits your heart rate to a watch) all this device is used for is to monitor movement. It should not be used to diagnose, monitor, treat or alleviate a disease, injury or handicap. Nor should it be used to investigate (i.e. find the cause of) a physiological process (i.e. breathing).

6. How does Hero transmit the sound?
Snuza Movement Monitors don't transmit sound. In fact, they don't transmit any radio frequency at all (and hence there's no danger of radio-frequency radiation). The only thing that emanates from Hero is sound (from the alarm) and light (from the indicator LEDs), making it ultra-safe for use on babies. If you would like to transmit sound to another room in the house, we recommend that you use Hero in conjunction with an Audio or Audio/Video monitor, such as Snuza Video. This way, if Hero alarms, you will be sure to hear it over the Audio/Video monitor. Our unique Snuza Trio 3-in-1 combination is the perfect solution, providing Audio, Video and Movement monitoring in one package.

7. Why use a Snuza Hero?
Although there are already baby movement monitors on the market which alert parents or caregivers to any cessation in movement they do not offer mobility as they rely either on the availability of electricity, or on the baby being at home in its cot where the under-mattress monitors need to be placed. Snuza Hero monitors are fully mobile and can be used wherever baby is, eg in a carseat, stroller, pram, carrycot, etc.

8. How does a Snuza Hero work?
Once Hero is clipped onto the diaper and activated, it will immediately start monitoring movement. If your baby were to stop all movement for 15 seconds, Hero will emit a safe, vibrating stimulus to gently rouse the baby. If after 5 more seconds, movement has not resumed, Hero will sound an alarm to alert you to act.

9. How easy is it to use Hero?
Very easy. Just clip it onto your baby's diaper and turn it on. This shouldn't take more than a few seconds.

10. Can I use Hero with reusable/fabric nappies?
Yes. If the fabric nappies are too thick for attachment, Hero should be securely attached to the nappy cover or waterproof pants - ensure a snug fit so that Hero maintains body contact. You may need to position Hero slightly to the side to ensure maximum contact.

11. Can Hero be used with a baby that sleeps on his tummy?
Hero relies on movement in the area where the sensor is located. Usually, when sleeping on its back (as recommended by the World Health Organisation to reduce the risk of SIDS) the sensor contained in the blue tip of Hero will be located as close to the tummy as possible where the most movement of a baby occurs. If baby sleeps on its tummy, then the tummy movement is reduced, simply because of the restriction of the mattress. More movement occurs at the sides than when sleeping on the back. By trial you will need to position Hero away from the tummy, because that will cause discomfort, towards the side where you can visibly see movement. There is a greater possibility of false alarms occurring in this case, but after a few trials you will find a position to attach Hero that will provide successful monitoring of movement. Please also be aware that if your baby sleeps on his tummy then any alarm sound may be muffled, and the use of a sound monitor may be required.

12. Is Hero safe?
Absolutely! Baby's safety is paramount. Hero utilises an ultra-low voltage (3.6V) battery, emits no radiation and has no side effects.

13. Does the monitor come in contact with the baby?
Hero clips onto the diaper and the sensor located at the tip of Hero needs to be in contact with the baby in the area of the navel. There may be a thin layer of clothing (eg. a vest) between the sensor and the skin.

14. Can Hero travel?
Yes, this is what separates it from other monitors. As Hero requires no mains power, wires or cords (it is battery operated) it can go anywhere and everywhere you and your baby go. Please note:- Hero monitors detect all movement, including those from external sources such as a moving vehicle, pram, etc. Hero should only be relied upon when there is NO external movement present, ie when the vehicle, pram, carrycot, etc is stationery.

15. Until what age is Hero recommended?
Biosentronics recommends that Hero be used until the age of 1 year.

16. Can Hero be used again?
Yes, absolutely. If the battery fails or the power is depleted, it can easily be replaced by purchasing a battery from your national Snuza Distributor (see details on the Contact Us page of this website). This will then enable you to use Hero for subsequent babies.

17. How do I change the batteries?
Please see Replacing the Battery on the Hero Support page on this website.

18. Is Hero rechargeable?
The battery is non-rechargeable but can be replaced (see Replacing the Battery on the Hero Support page on this website ).

19. Why does the light in the middle above the tick occasionally flash red?
There is a feature that is designed to detect when there are very small movements, or small relative movements. This may be used to check if Hero is properly attached to the diaper (and only tiny movements are being detected). It's actually an orange flash, but it looks red because it flashes so fast and the eye sees red as the dominant colour. You should not be concerned at all if it occasionally flashes orange (even if it looks red) - the unit is still functioning perfectly normally and monitoring every movement. Of course, if it flashes red on each movement, it indicates that there has been a vibration, and movement resumed.

20. Is the Snuza Hero suitable for co-sleeping babies or bedsharing? The Snuza Hero will pick up any external movement. The Snuza Hero is not suitable for co-sleeping or bedsharing.
