It's always hard for students to understand that groups of things can be represented by several different fractions. For example, a set of 12 can be divided into thirds, fourths, and sixths, not just twelfths or halves. The first thing that came to me in terms of a hands-on example of this was a dozen eggs. If you use 3 eggs from your carton, you haven't just used 3/12ths, you've also used 1/4th. I love giving kids real-world examples of math in action!
